Mirror’s edge review

March 4th, 2009

So I finally completed the game. Most of the people say that it is too short but in my opinion 5-6 hours which it took me to to complete the game is normal in quite a lot of games these days.  I died quite a lot of times during the game and that is probably the reason it took me so long to complete.

The game mechanics are done well. There is usually more than one way to move forward and finding the harder ways gives you a good feeling of success. The jumping and running animations look good and if you look down you can even see your own body unlike in most first person games. The game doesn’t have any kind of hud and only thing you will see in the screen is a little dot to be your crosshair. You can see your health going down when the world starts to lose its colors. Health can be restored fast by hiding for a moment which is sometimes hard or impossible when you have >4 heavily armed bad guys running in your tail. The weapons are done good and since the point of the game is not to beat everyone who comes against you and steal their weapons and just blast thru everything it has been made imposibble to reload and if  you are carrying anything bigger than small pistol or smg you won’t be able to run and jump properly. Sometimes though it is required that you disarm and enemy and steal their weapons to get out of tight situation.

The maps are well done and there is lots of variety that where you are running in. The roofs don’t look same at all and insides are done well. Even when inside you don’t have to stop jumping around since there is always some little thing hanging somewhere that you can use to boost up your speed or to get higher with. Inside you usually have only one door to go forward from but the doors are always marked by being completely red. The runner seems to have some kind of obsession with red things since when you see something red you can use it to go forward.

If I have to say one bad thing about the game I would have to say the fact that at some points it is hard. It actually shouldn’t be a bad thing but in this kind of game I would just like to jump around without having to do the same part over and over again since I can’t get a one jump just right. That made the game a little less short for me but the game was so incredibly fun that when it ended I instantly started searching google for if they are making a sequel to the game. Sequel is indeed planned and I will get it instantly when it comes out.

So overally good parts:

Beautiful

Good game mechanics

The feeling of freedom

Character animation

And the bad things:

At some points little too hard

Too short.
